Getting a PhD funded is hard anywhere. From a developing country, it’s a different level of hard. Tuition fees you can’t afford. Application costs that eat your monthly budget. English tests that cost more than a week’s salary. And on top of all that, you’re competing with students who’ve had 10× the resources and prep time.

But the money exists — and a lot of it. Governments, universities, and international bodies funnel billions into doctoral scholarships for developing countries every year. The problem is knowing where it is and what the actual deadlines look like. This is that list, updated for PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries 2026: Full List with Deadlines

📋 Table of Contents

What Counts as a Developing Country?

Most programs use the World Bank or OECD DAC list. That covers most of Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Latin America, and parts of the Middle East.

If you’re from Pakistan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Nepal, Myanmar, or any similar country, you’re almost certainly eligible for every scholarship below. Some programs also include lower-middle income countries — check the eligibility page for the exact list before applying.

PhD Scholarships for Developing Countries 2026: Full List

SCHOLARSHIP 01
🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Commonwealth PhD Scholarships

✔ Fully Funded
Commonwealth Citizens
Deadline: December
What You Get
Full tuition · Return flights · Monthly living allowance · Thesis grant · Warm clothing allowance

This one is well-known but worth putting first because the coverage is complete — you pay nothing. The UK government covers everything including your return flight home. Fields covered are broad: science, social sciences, arts, and engineering. The only real catch is that your research must connect to development impact in your home country.

Apply through your national nominating agency, not directly through a UK university — that’s where most people get confused.
SCHOLARSHIP 02
🇩🇪 Germany

DAAD Doctoral Research Scholarships

✔ Fully Funded
Developing Countries
Deadline: Oct – Jan
What You Get
Monthly stipend ~€1,200 · Health insurance · Travel allowance · Family supplement (if applicable)

Germany is one of the top destinations for fully funded PhD scholarships for international students in 2026, and DAAD is the reason. Several tracks to know:

  • EPOS — specifically for development-related research
  • Research Grants — individual PhD projects at German universities
  • Helmholtz OCPC — targets researchers from China specifically
No IELTS required at most programs if your previous degree was in English. A medium of instruction certificate works.
SCHOLARSHIP 03
🌍 Global — Women in STEM

Schlumberger Faculty for the Future Fellowship

✔ Up to $50,000/year
Women Only · Developing Countries
Deadline: November
What You Get
Up to $50,000/year for PhD or postdoc · Research expenses · Travel to conferences

One of the better-funded PhD fellowships for developing countries that specifically targets women in science. If you’re a woman pursuing physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science, or a related STEM field — prioritize this one.

Recipients are expected to return home and teach at a university after finishing. Most people find the tradeoff well worth it.
SCHOLARSHIP 04
🌙 OIC Member Countries (57 Nations)

Islamic Development Bank PhD Scholarships

✔ Fully Funded
OIC Members
Deadline: Jan – March
What You Get
Full tuition · Monthly stipend · Family allowance · Health insurance · Return travel

The IsDB scholarship is one of the largest fully funded doctoral programs specifically for OIC member countries. Coverage is thorough: tuition, living costs, insurance, and — in some tracks — an allowance if you have dependents. You must be applying to a university within the IsDB member country network.

Fields prioritized: science, technology, engineering, math, medicine, and agriculture.
SCHOLARSHIP 05
🇧🇷 Brazil

TWAS-CNPq Doctoral Fellowships

✔ Fully Funded
Developing Countries (excl. Brazil)
Deadline: April
What You Get
Monthly stipend in Brazilian Reais · Covered accommodation · Research access at top Brazilian universities

Brazil flies under the radar as a PhD destination but has genuinely strong research programs, especially in tropical medicine, agriculture, environmental science, and engineering. The TWAS partnership with CNPq gives researchers from other developing countries access to Brazilian university labs.

Strong research infrastructure at USP and UNICAMP — excellent choice if your field overlaps with Brazil’s strengths.
SCHOLARSHIP 06
🇪🇺 Europe (Multi-Country)

Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorates

✔ ~€2,500/month
All Nationalities · Non-EU Priority
Deadline: Oct – Feb
What You Get
~€2,500/month stipend (Category A for non-EU) · Full tuition · Travel and mobility costs

Erasmus Mundus is a family of joint doctoral programs, each run by a consortium of European universities. You apply to a specific program — not to the EU generally. The research is split across 2+ countries; you’ll spend time at different universities during your PhD.

Check the EACEA website for the current list of active Erasmus Mundus PhD programs — the list changes each cycle.
SCHOLARSHIP 07
🇯🇵 Japan + 🌍 World Bank

JJ/WBGSP Graduate Scholarship

✔ Fully Funded
Mid-Career Professionals
Deadline: Feb + May
What You Get
Full tuition · Monthly stipend · Health insurance · Round-trip airfare

This one has a specific profile — it’s for people who already have at least 3 years of development-related work experience, applying to a master’s at a JJ/WBGSP partner university. Listed here because many PhD students overlook it for their master’s-to-PhD pipeline. 44 partner programs across 24 universities in the US, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Two application windows: Window 1 closes late February; Window 2 closes late May.
SCHOLARSHIP 08
🇨🇭 Switzerland

ETH Zurich Excellence Scholarship

✔ Full Tuition + CHF 12,000/sem
Top Performers Globally
Deadline: December
What You Get
Full tuition waiver · CHF 12,000 per semester stipend · Access to world-class research labs

ETH Zurich consistently ranks among the world’s top universities for engineering and natural sciences. The Excellence Scholarship covers master’s students, but a significant number of recipients convert directly to PhD positions within ETH labs. Getting into ETH on the Excellence Scholarship and then transitioning to a PhD is a legitimate, well-trodden pathway.

The applicant pool from developing countries is smaller than you’d expect — your odds are better than you think.
SCHOLARSHIP 09
🇨🇳 China

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)

✔ Fully Funded
Focus on Developing Nations
Deadline: Feb – April
What You Get
Full tuition · Free accommodation · CNY 3,500/month stipend (PhD) · Health insurance

China has scaled up its scholarship programs aggressively. The CSC scholarship now covers over 270 Chinese universities, and PhD programs are fully funded. No IELTS required at most universities if you provide a medium of instruction certificate. Programs available in both English and Mandarin (with Chinese language training included).

One of the most accessible routes for African students in 2026 — several African countries have bilateral agreements with China that add additional CSC seats.
SCHOLARSHIP 10
🇨🇦 Canada

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

✔ CAD $50k/yr × 3 years
Canadian + Int’l Students
Deadline: November
What You Get
CAD $50,000/year for 3 years · Prestige recognition · Research support at Canadian universities

Vanier is Canada’s flagship doctoral scholarship. International students from developing countries are eligible but must apply through a Canadian university that nominates you — you cannot apply directly. Selection criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership (community involvement in your home country counts).

Fields are open: health research, natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities.
SCHOLARSHIP 11
🇩🇪 Germany

Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship

✔ €2,670/month
Postdoc + Some PhD Tracks
Deadline: Rolling
What You Get
€2,670/month (postdoc rate) · Travel allowance · Family supplement · Language course support

Humboldt is one of the few fellowships with no fixed deadline — you apply when you’re ready. The catch: you need to already have a contact at a German university who agrees to host you. Cold applications without a German supervisor don’t work here.

If you’ve published, attended international conferences, or have existing academic connections in Germany — start there first.

How to Approach These Applications

💡 Start with Scholarships, Not Universities

Most students do it backwards — they pick a university and then hunt for funding. Flip it. Find the scholarship first, then identify which universities qualify.

Your Statement of Purpose Carries More Weight Than Your GPA

Especially for development-focused scholarships. They want to understand what problem you’re trying to solve and why you’re the person to solve it. Be specific.

“I want to study climate change” loses to “I’m researching how flash flood prediction models can be calibrated for monsoon-affected regions in northern Pakistan.”

Get Your Documents Ready Early

Most programs require:

  • Academic transcripts (official, with translations if needed)
  • 2–3 strong recommendation letters from academics
  • A detailed research proposal
  • Proof of English proficiency or MOI certificate
  • Updated CV / resume
  • Passport copy and ID documents

That’s at least 6–8 weeks of work if you’re starting from scratch. Begin early.

Apply to 4–5 Scholarships, Not Just 1–2

These are competitive programs. A 20% success rate is realistic if your application is strong — that means 5 applications, 1 scholarship. Plan accordingly and diversify your targets.

📝 Final Word

The funding is there. The question is whether your application makes the committee choose you over the 200 other qualified people in the pile. Write the research proposal first — everything else follows from that.
